Choose platinum wedding rings
So it’s your special day and you want a special ring. It can’t be just any ring, but the ring. So how do you decide? You look for celebrity guidance of course. And it seems the celebrities are choosing platinum wedding rings. Some jewellers are saying the demand for platinum wedding rings is down to a “white wave” over recent years, as people are preferring white metals over traditional gold. And this surge for platinum wedding rings has to be in part thanks to the likes of Ulrika Jonsson, Madonna and Elton John.
By royal demand
Madonna and Elton are probably the two biggest queens in pop, but real royalty also opts for platinum. Camilla Parker Bowles showed off her platinum engagement ring, a Royal Family heirloom, with a square central diamond and three diamond baguettes on either side, although their wedding rings were made from Welsh gold, as is the tradition.
Riding the white wave
The celebrities riding the “white wave” have helped confirm platinum as the metal of choice for wedding rings and everyday wear, leading one merchant jeweller to announce that, “white metal is the 21st century colour.”
Pair of platinum wedding rings
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, were reported to exchange uncharacteristically understated bling when they exchanged a pair of platinum and diamond rings - in the first ‘gay wedding’ during a civil partnership ceremony in Belfast. The rings were said to be valued at £55,000.
Finding Mr Right
Ulrika Jonsson found love when she married a contestant on an ITV show, Mr Right. 15 women competed for a chance to date an eligible bachelor - Lance Gerrard-Wright, but it was the programme’s presenter who struck lucky. Her wedding ring was made of platinum.
The King of Bling
But it isn’t just today’s celebrities who love platinum wedding rings. Elvis Presley’s platinum wedding ring (naturally, studded with diamonds) from his 1967 marriage to Priscilla recently went up for auction, at an estimated £75,000.
White hot fashion
Platinum wedding rings are certainly a hot fashion trend that has taken the jewellery industry by storm. Other celebrities that have fallen for the cool elegant charms of platinum include Russell Crowe, Gwen Stefani, Reese Witherspoon and Kate Hudson.
